Dax loves his tug toy as a reward, he will do anything for it. When he finds a person alive or not, he sits patiently for his reward.
Favorite Memory: Dax attended a memorial for a child that he had helped locate. The child’s family and schoolmates wanted photos with him on a bench named in memorial for the child. A very sad day but a reminder of the powerful tool the dog’s nose is and how it can help to heal in tragic circumstances.

Java will bark and bring her handler to the missing person she just found. She loves playing keep-away with a tug and toss toys afterward.
Favorite Memory: Every day makes a beautiful new memory with Java. She loves her work, her play, her companions, and life!”

Billie was originally my husband’s K9, but when he was injured and had an extended recovery, I stole her!!! She is a ray of sunshine and a pleasure to work with, being both very responsive and reliable. She just loves to work!!! When she finds her subject, they had better be ready to give a full body massage and bring on the treats!!!
Favorite Memory: My favorite memories include the view from behind when David gets home from work. I have never before seen a dog wag their whole body!!

Hawk is obsessed with his work of finding lost and missing people. He is trained to find them alive or even deceased. His reward varies and he chooses which toy he wants to play with before each training session. He has a rubber Frisbee, a Chuckit Breath Right Stick, and a Nero ball-on-a-rope. At home, his favorite toys are his collection of rubber duckies, and his Holee Roller. He also has a plush toy that he likes to fall asleep nursing on. When Hawk finds the person he is searching for, he runs back to his handler at full speed and barks loudly at her. Sometimes he has to do this many times because he is so fast, and he leaves her behind when he gets the scent! Then he leads her back to the lost person and loudly demands his reward.
Name of Handler: Wendy McIlroy
Name of Canine: Moira
Year of Birth of Canine: 2014
SARDUS Certifications: Suburban Trailing type II, HRD type III/IV
Other Certifications: CGC
Local Team Name: Region 3 K9 SAR
City and State: Corvallis, OR
Moira is a tiny lab, only 40#, but she is a pocket rocket!
There is no question about her favorite reward—Moira loves her tennis ball and considers all other balls unworthy. If a rope is attached to a tennis ball, it is broken.
Moira loves trailing, and her tail never stops wagging when she is on a trail. As she approaches her subject her tail wag turns into a helicopter and, when she arrives, she stares at the subject in expectation of her ball magically appearing. Walking behind that happily wagging dog on a trail is one of my favorite things.
We added HRD to her repertoire, and she took to that as well. Her alert is a sit, although she will sometimes bark as well.
A favorite memory: there are so many that it is hard to pinpoint one. She is a loving companion and works at least as hard as she plays!
Jenner was a 60-pound male Labrador Retriever, who was certified as a FEMA Type I Disaster Canine, a Wilderness Search Canine, and was also a certified Park Ranger Service Dog. He earned his Canine Good Citizen and a Started Hunting Retriever Title as well. Jenner went on many wilderness searches, and also several disaster searches, including the Fort Collins floods, the Scottsbluff Sugar Plant Explosion, and several fires in the area. We also searched at the World Trade Center, where he served to help locate people and also gave much comfort to the search responders and families. Jenner loved his job as a search dog, and was incredibly strong at tugging for his reward ….. pulling most people right out from their hiding spot! He was also very thoughtful and kind to all he met …. he was a gifted ambassador to park visitors and new handlers in search, showing people how to train their dogs and be good citizens. My favorite memories of him are just looking into his eyes and sharing our love for each other. Jenner has many offspring who are also searching dogs.

Name of Canine: Clancy
Year of Birth of Canine: 2009
Year of Death of Canine: 2020
SARDUS Certifications: HRD, water
Other Certifications: Water, Air scent, HRD previously through CCSAR
Local Team Name: SARDUS
Clancy loved his Kong! He was so high drive, even as he got older.
His alert for HRD was either a down at source, or a refind when I was further away. His alert for a refind was to jump up and put his paws on my chest, so I preferred when he just did his down!!
Favorite Memory: One of my favorite memories of Clancy was that as much as he loved working and was extremely high energy, his body language was very quiet around anyone who was special needs. My son has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair part of the time. Clancy loved him so much and would instantly calm his body so as not to knock him down.

SARDUS Certifications: HRD
Other Certifications: Yes

Jasper is named after the dog in Daphne du Maurier’s novel, Rebecca. The book makes frequent references to Jasper’s tail thumping on the floor when his people enter the room. As an unnamed puppy on her first ride home she and my other dog, Iva were riding in separate kennels in the enclosed back of my pickup. On the first break stop on the drive, as I walked to the back of the truck, I could hear her tail thumping on the side of her kennel.

Her favorite reward is a food treat – a cookie called Wiggles & Wags Oven Lovins’ – she’s crazy about them! Her alert is a sit and look.
Favorite Memory: I have so many great memories with Arya, but probably the most recent was our time traveling together to Mesa University Forensic Investigation Research Station for a two-day workshop. She worked so hard in her class and made me so proud. Another great memory was on a search in Casper, WY where she got to ride on a UTV for the first time. She’s such a trooper at trying new things.

Ember is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Ember’s favorite thing is searching and getting some string cheese when she finds what she’s searching for. Ember is a human remains detection dog, helping detectives provide answers and bringing home people to their loved ones. Ember tells me she has found something by laying down and barking.
Favorite Memory: One of her first searches was where she climbed into a hollowed-out tree and was struggling to figure out how to lay down while balancing on a tree when I came over. Using a flashlight to peer into the hole we discovered a human rib.

Tripp’s favorite reward after a find is to get his tug toy and plenty of tugging play from his subject and handler.
When Tripp finds a person, he runs back to me and jumps up, and slams me in the chest. When he finds remains, he does a down near the source.
Favorite Memory: In 2019 when he had three finds. The most exciting was finding a 12-year-old boy alive and well, but cold, up in the Estes Park area.

Henry was a very enthusiastic, loyal, and hardworking partner who loved to search. He brought a smile to everyone he was around with his silly personality. His favorite reward was a cuz ball on a rope. When he found his subject, he would lay down in front of them and give his silly grin.
Favorite Memories: My favorite memories of Henry are many, but especially those while searching in the mountains of Colorado.

Name of Canine: Rook
Year of birth of Canine: 2014

Rook’s favorite reward is food – specifically tuna fudge. He also likes to end training sessions with a great game of tug with anyone willing to play along (and can hang on).
Rook’s indication is a sit, but if I’m out of sight he will bark to let me know he found something great and to bring his reward.
Rook is a master at leaning into people for some love and scratches. He loves everyone (and their dogs too!)
Name of Canine: Ollie
Year of Birth of Canine: 2016
SARDUS Certifications: Trailing and human remains
Local Team Name: Jefferson County Sheriff/SARDUS

He LOVES Vienna sausage and only gets it when he finds someone. When he finds someone, he sits with them.
Favorite Memory: My favorite memory of Ollie is when he learned how to shake his paw, it only took me about 5 minutes to teach him and now he does it like he is waving on his own, when I am eating something he thinks I should be sharing
